CEO Meets Homeschool with Timea Parker
Episode 74: 10x Jumps-Forced Vacations & Planning Sessions
Welcome to CEO Meets Homeschool. My name is Tamiya Parker and I am both a CEO and homeschool mom to my four boys. Welcome to episode 74. So I missed my chance to record this podcast when my house. It was quiet. Once a week, my kiddos, they go to the library, and before you think, Oh, that's so studious. It's because the library, once a week, one afternoon will pull out their Nintendo Switch, which we do not have. And my kids are like, it's the greatest thing ever. So they, all four of them, they work so well together, and they're so well behaved right before this time comes once a week. And so anyway, What I've been trying to do is record my podcast during this quiet slot, but I did not make it. So now I'm recording and my kids are literally like, I can hear them up and down the stairs, going back and forth down the hallway. So we'll see how well this goes, but it is a good day and I'm grateful. We just finished Thanksgiving. My husband and I, we just celebrated our 22nd anniversary and I, I feel like I've been sharing that with everybody because I'm so, it's something worth celebrating in, you know, everyone has different stories and we have people we care deeply for that maybe got married same time and marriages haven't lasted and like, everyone has a story. This is not like meant to sound like you're judging, but when you hit 22 years, like you've seen. Plenty of highs and you've had plenty of lows. And I just think of all the effort and work that a marriage takes. And I, I'm always thrilled when I meet people that have celebrated their 40th or 50th anniversary. And it just, it's just a lot of work, but at the same time, you have a companion, a friend for life. And I think it's so beautiful. I'll rabbit hole for just a minute, speaking of relationships and a friend for life. One of the things that I appreciate so much about Ben, my husband, and it's super not romantic and kind of random, but it makes me so beyond grateful for him. I have a tendency of passing out when I get a needle. I've always been this way. And now pretty much if I ever have to have blood work done, he usually will block time and kind of be like there for me because of my random blacking out. And so the last time was actually last summer. He did. I let him know I had to get blood work. Sure enough, he blocked the time. He took me to my appointment and they even sometimes like if you have to fast or whatnot, they usually are like, you need to have sugar in you so you're less likely to pass out. And so he shows up when it's time to take me. He had gotten me like a Pepsi or a Coke for the sugar. And I was like, yay, he knows me so well. It's those little details that to me make up a whole lifetime of a, of a marriage, like all the small, simple acts anyway, so I thought I would share that. And I am going to talk about actually the next 10 X jump. Is called forced vacations, or I also use the word planning sessions, but before I kind of go down that pathway, when I think of a forced vacation, I've been really trying to let myself. Dream on what is it that I would love to do. What is something that as a family, we would like to do. And I've gotten way better at it. And if you're in my circle, you know, I've consistently tried to go and do things, or I might even call it adventuring. Cause to me, a vacation is an adventure. And this morning I was sharing so there's a whole world out there of creative people that adventure. And because I homeschool my kids, there's a term that's Come up and they call it world schooling and I am telling you there are some pro world schoolers out there Unlocking this whole new world that I had no idea existed and I ended up getting invited to this to kind of be part of this group and it's this world schooling group that they Travel the world on these cruises and it's kind of fascinated me and I was sharing this with Ben this morning of this one Cruise, which is not on our horizon at all but I was just like there's this cruise and it's like 69 nights and The places it will hit let me just share some of them and I'll keep going I'll make it quick. So they go to South Africa, Namibia, Camp Verde, Portugal, U. K. territory, Italy, Greece, Turkey, back to Greece, Croatia, Montenegro, Italy, Malta, Italy, France, Italy, Italy, France, hold on, it keeps going, Italy, Italy, France, France, Spain, these are all the ports, it stops at Spain again, Morocco, the Canary Islands, Canary Islands again, You Then all the way over to Florida, Columbia, Panama Canal, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, and the final stop is Los Angeles, California. This is incredible. Anyway, so I'm like, maybe I'll put a pin in that someday, but there's definitely much smaller cruisers, cruises, and probably priced a lot more reasonable. This one's, it's crazy awesome and pretty expensive. But this 10 X jump that. I wanted to share about, it talks about this 10x jump that I want to talk about today, forest vacations and planning sessions. It comes from the concept that when you are kind of head down so close and focused in your work constantly, that you actually never get a chance to kind of clear your head and see things from a further perspective, get the big picture. And so I've heard this concept a few times and. What I ended up doing is anytime we got away, I would block in that vacation when I was calling a planning session. And all I would do would be a lot of journaling. I would just think about where my small business is, where I'd like to see it go, what steps that would involve. I found being away, being. In a different location, ideally somewhere I'd always hoped and dreamed of going, that even opened up more creativity. So I kind of turned this whole thing into more of a challenge where, let's think of somewhere we would love to go, that seems maybe even slightly impossible because, It doesn't seem practical and then figure out how on earth we can make it happen. And then when I go there, I take a moment to just reflect or plan. And it really has made a significant impact on my small business. You wouldn't think going away somehow helps your business, but that's the whole point of what today's podcast is. Is it absolutely. Has had a profound effect and if you read a lot of business books or personal development books, they will, you'll start hearing a repeat of this same concept. And just even, I believe it was Bill Gates, maybe also a founder of Apple, but they would go do these like planning sessions for like a whole week. They would shut out the whole world, go to some remote cabin, And it was those moments that really helped them grow their business. So that is something that I do incorporate. And in addition to what I was calling forced vacations, there's a, another side to it is it actually lets your team have a chance to, a lot of times the owner is tied so much into the business. They cannot step away. So this tests that. Your team is like, yeah, we've got this, you know, go away. And it allows you to test that things can carry on without you there. So I wanted to share 10X jumps is forcification. And I recommend bring a journal, have a planning session, some quiet time when you do that, have a great day.
