CEO Meets Homeschool with Timea Parker
Episode 88: Unique Ability - A Dan Sullivan Concept
Welcome to season two of CEO Meets Homeschool. My name is Tamiya Parker, and I am both a CEO and homeschool mom to my four boys. Welcome to episode 88. So in December, I had kind of some cool experiences, and I'm big on measurements, and I apply that a lot in my personal life, not just in business, and so a lot of the measurements I tend to do is When people will share something with me, I think of how that applies. If it was something that I did and their response to it. I use their responses often as a measurement. Am I on the right track? Do I appreciate this? Is this not good? Positive? Negative? Anyway, so this is a positive story, in my opinion. Anyway, but I wanted to share this. So in December, in the course of about three weeks, I had five, uh, different, uh, Uh, folks approach me on asking if I would chat with them about starting a business. And it was so interesting because it was, it felt fairly back to back. To me, over just a few weeks, having five folks approach me, that was a higher number than usual. And in some cases, it was word of mouth, it wasn't necessarily somebody I knew, but they cycled, they had spoken to somebody that I knew and approached me. And I thought that was interesting. And then also in that time frame, I received a note from somebody who I actually have fallen out of contact with. And that note, I would say about four or five years ago, I had told somebody. You should totally start a business and this is like your superpower. Uh, I had mentioned like somebody had a skill and talent and they would do great if they started a business. And that note that I got recently, they were like, I started that business that you had told me about, thank you for believing in me. And they were really excited. And I thought. That's really awesome. Like, I'm seeing this pattern here and I'm not really kind of, there's folks approaching me and I'm, I'm measuring this thinking, what does this mean? And then lastly, This one, I really love, and it's a little bit different. I have, I've mentioned my buddy who worked for Warren Buffett a while ago. He no longer works for him, but he shares some really awesome values that I appreciate. And he had approached me saying if I would jump on a call with him and his wife to talk about homeschooling. And I was like, uh, yes, anytime I will move my calendar around. They have younger children. And of course, homeschool is very dear to my heart. And I kind of. pave my own way in the homeschool world. They may not love all the things I have to share, but I love the journey that my children and I have created in the homeschool world. So between all of those things, I'm going to shift a little bit and talk about a unique ability as it relates to strategic coach. It's a Dan Sullivan concept. And so I'm actually, one of my goals this entire year is to try to. Really kinda define what my own unique ability is. And I feel like that by doing this, it will help me have clarity even in more depth on what to say no to and then what to say yes to. Because this whole, everybody has a unique ability. So that's encouraging. Don't ever think that, you know, everybody's doing something awesome, but you're not. It's just sometimes we have to dive a little deeper. And so that's, I think that's totally awesome right there. Knowing everybody was created uniquely and special. But a lot of times we just get moving so fast in life that we just don't get a moment to slow down and think about it. So one of the. I'm midway through this book and I may likely, uh, talk about unique ability a little bit more as I'm trying to peel back the layers, but there's four different categories that you have to work through. And the main thing about unique ability, it, it's kind of supposed to have two key components, probably a bit more, but I'll just talk about these two main ones. One, it's supposed to be something that you are, have a superior skill at, that you're excellent at. But the other important piece is you're supposed to be passionate about. So let me give another example of a different area. A lot of us are excellent at things, but the way they describe it, there's no passion behind it. And I feel like in a lot of stuff that I do for more so pride for work than. Being a mom or homeschooler is, I feel like I fall into the area that I've been pretty good or I could say excellent at a lot of things, but there's not passion behind it. So I'm like really interested to break it apart and find out my unique ability. And I have been a bit frustrated. I have a general idea. So I'm sharing this to just kind of encourage others. Think about what your God given unique ability could be. Because what happens is they say you not only can increase your revenue in, like, much less effort, you get lost, you appreciate the work you're doing. And I really love the inspiration behind all this. There's two more categories I'll share. And hopefully I'm not repeating this. I may have mentioned this in a prior podcast. So my apologies, I'm kind of fixated on this for the year, but the other two categories is if you're competent in something, which means you meet the minimum standards of these activities. They give you some anxiety. Maybe it's something you have to keep repeating, but you're just, you barely are getting by. And then lastly, the fourth category is incompetent, which basically means you fail at it and you try to avoid it. It causes you stress. So the four categories that I'm working on right now in this kind of unique ability workbook that I'm doing, it's your unique ability, which is what I'm trying to define. There's excellent activities, but there's no passion behind it. There's competent activities. You're decent at it. They're kind of causing anxiety and then lastly, there's incompetent. You're bad at it and you shouldn't be doing it. And so the interesting thing is, as you start identifying this, you, one of the first phases is you're supposed to start removing the things that are on your plate that you're incompetent with. Or that you're competent with and then it's going to take more work to eventually remove things that you're excellent at, but there's no passion behind. And it's just kind of fascinates me. And as I mentioned about people approaching me about starting a business or somebody did start a business and I had pointed out a skill of theirs. And then four years later, they. They went ahead and did that, but they always remembered me mentioning that to them that deeply touched me and I was like, I love those types of stories. I like the idea that I may be inspired or encourage somebody and then, of course, my friend who wants to chat about homeschool, but I'll switch real quick. I don't think my business in particular is anything. Over the top, like, for people to seek me out. And so I was thinking about that. I'm like, why are these people all approaching me? Cause it's not anything really fancy. And I thought, well, if I had to venture a guess, I think they like the life I'm living, the balance or whatever. And. And then lastly, I'm like, how is that tied to my unique ability? Because I could, I like creating a life that's very intentional, where I'm there for my husband, and I'm there for my kids. And I enjoy the people that I'm surrounded with. So I don't have a big purpose in today's topic, except to just share a little bit more about unique ability. And maybe to challenge those listening, everybody has one, maybe think about what your day is like and start pulling apart different things. What category would that, am I excellent at that? Do I love this? I'm excellent. There's passion behind it. Am I incompetent? You know, put it in different categories and, and think about it. I'm happy to share my workbook. Feel free to send me a message and I'm happy to share the course that I'm working on. So that's everything for today. Have a great day, everybody.
